CAQIC Patient Registry Software: Asthma/Cardiovascular/Diabetes Electronic Management System (ACVDEMS), Cardiovascular/Diabetes Electronic Management System (CVDEMS) & Patient Electronic Care System (PECS)

This page houses information about the registry programs developed by the Bureau of Primary Health Care and available for use in the California Quality Improvement Collaborative. Here, you can find out more about ACVDEMS, CVDEMS, and PECS.

Clinical Information Systems (CIS)

Patient registries have been used in health care for many years. However, with the development of the Care Model (CM) and the adoption of the Model by many health care organizations, the need for a specific type of registry became apparent.

One of the components of the CM is a Clinical Information System (CIS) that provides both the detailed clinical view of any patient's information and an overview of data from the entire patient population. The CM registry allows the provider and the staff of the health center to deliver the appropriate care to a given patient, and also makes it easy to obtain information about all patients.

ACVDEMS, CVDEMS and PECS provide a Clinical Information System that allows health professionals to access information that is pertinent to an individual patient's care and to make queries against information for the entire patient population.

Asthma/Cardiovascular/Diabetes Electronic Management System (ACVDEMS/CVDEMS)

What is ACVDEMS/CVDEMS?

ACVDEMS and CVDEMS are database applications designed to assist care providers and management to track the quality of care provided to patients with asthma, cardiovascular disease and diabetes, and is a combination of a computer and a paper-based tracking and reporting system - and is free software.

Who may use ACVDEMS/CVDEMS?

ACVDEMS and CVDEMS are “freeware”, which the Bureau of Primary Health Care Health Disparities Collaborative has made available for your use. Users report that these programs are quick to install, easy to learn and helps them provide better care for their patients.

Where can I get ACVDEMS/CVDEMS?

You can download CVDEMS at no cost here. For ACVDEMS, which is only available for Access 2000, contact Bob Larson in the Portland office of the Collaborative staff.

Where can I find out more about ACVDEMS/CVDEMS?

Detailed information is available in the CVDEMS User's Manual. For ACVDEMS, contact Bob Larson in the Portland office of the Collaborative staff.

Patient Electronic Care System (PECS)

What is PECS?

PECS, like CVDEMS, is a database application designed to assist care providers and management to track the quality of care provided to patients with multiple chronic conditions, such as asthma, cancer, cardiovascular disease, depression, diabetes, diabetes prevention and prevention – with the ability for users to add other items. It is also a combination of a computer and a paper-based tracking and reporting system.

Who may use PECS?

PECS is currently only available to health centers participating in the BPHC Health Disparities Collaboratives or other collaboratives with the appropriate equilvalency of models and measures.

Where can I get PECS?

Clinics and Health Centers meeting the criteria of the above item can download PECS and upgrades to PECS for free from here. Only health centers participating in the collaboratives will be able to fully install and run the application, those health centers will receive individual passwords to complete the installation.

Where can I find out more about PECS?

Detailed information is available in the PECS Information Packet, which is in PDF format.

Working with Registry Reports

One of the most powerful and flexible features of a registry is the ability to create and run reports. The reports feature provides the ability to query the entire registry database for information that summarizes a particular disease and for information about patients that meet specified criteria.

ACVDEMS, CVDEMS and PECS provide two types of reports…a registry summary report for each disease condition and a spreadsheet report. The registry report summarizes data for a given disease for a group of patient records. The spreadsheet reports produces lists of patients that meet certain criteria. The criteria for which patients are included in reports is set by filters. Spreadsheet reports show columns of data and you can select which data columns are included and the order in which they appear.

From the Reports screen you are able to run a report; in PECS, you can also create a report, edit a report and delete reports. PECS also allows you to specify filters for a report, which can be a powerful way to query the databases to get information that meet the criteria you specify.
