DATE: Wednesday, June 26, 2019
TIME: 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (Pacific)
Colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in both men and women. One in 22 men and one in 24 women will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer in their lifetime.
The 80% in Every Community initiative is led by the American Cancer Society (ACS), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the NCCRT (an organization co-founded by the ACS and CDC) to substantially reduce colorectal cancer as a major public health problem.
80% in Every Community continues the progress and commitment from the original 80% by 2018 initiative, and reemphasizes the dedication to partnership, collective action, and the pooling of resources to reach 80% colorectal cancer screening rates.
However, not everyone is benefiting equally. There are still too many communities with lower colorectal cancer screening rates - rural communities, certain racial and ethnic communities, low income communities. Join this session and learn how to bring down barriers to screening, because everyone deserves to live a life free from colorectal cancer.
Join national expert, Durado Brooks, MD, MPH, Vice President Cancer Control Interventions for the American Cancer Society. We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Brooks back to California! This session will provide a look at California's colorectal cancer incidence, mortality, and screening data along with an update on best practices surrounding colorectal cancer screening.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Provide a snapshot of California's most current colorectal cancer incidence, mortality, and screening data;
- Emphasis on evidence-based colorectal cancer screening activities that respond to individualized needs, barriers, and motivations within a community; and,
- The role Community Health Centers play in identifying patient communities that need attention to achieve higher screening rates.
