Clinical anxiety is characterized by persistent, often unfounded fears that can interfere with work, relationships, and social activities. According to the National Institute on Mental Health, more Americans suffer from anxiety disorders than from any other type of mental illness, with over 18 percent experiencing some form of anxiety. In an effort to cope with their symptoms, it is not uncommon for people with anxiety disorders to misuse alcohol or drugs. Some estimates believe that individuals with anxiety are twice as likely to suffer from substance abuse as the general population.

This 90-minute webinar is designed for primary care and behavioral health clinicians of all levels looking to expand their understanding of co-existing anxiety and addiction. The audience will learn about the pathway linking emotions, physical anxiety, and the various behaviors (including substance use) that individuals utilize to cope with this anxiety. Unfortunately, those behaviors and patterns of thinking that start as methods to decrease anxiety often worsen symptoms in the long-term. The webinar will provide a foundation for clinicians to help patients regulate anxiety symptoms by bringing awareness to the specific symptoms and then linking those symptoms to the causative situation or emotion. Use of this method of anxiety regulation in the group setting will also be discussed as an important technique with which to increase patient attention and participation in group treatment settings.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
  • Identify the three levels of physical anxiety symptoms;
  • List four common behaviors used by patients with substance use disorders to manage their anxiety; and
  • Describe the psychological pathway linking uncomfortable emotions with physical anxiety and ineffective coping mechanisms.

PRESENTER
  • Dr. Katie Hirst, MD, Psychiatrist, BOLD Health

Dr. Katie Hirst, MD, trained in Family medicine and Psychiatry at UCSD's Combined Residency Program and founded the UCSD Maternal Mental Health Clinic during her third year of training. While on faculty in three departments at UCSD School of Medicine, Dr. Hirst gave local and international talks, wrote a teaching curriculum, published articles and chapters, supervised numerous trainees, and developed the first Maternal Mental Health Intensive Outpatient Program in the Southwest US. Dr. Hirst incorporates this mindfulness practice and her training in Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP) while caring for patients with substance use disorders, women with perinatal-mental illness, and patients with significant anxiety and depressive symptoms. She practices psychiatry and teaches mindfulness meditation at BOLD health, a physician-owned and -operated substance treatment program.
