The hostile immigration enforcement environment created by anti-immigrant policies is having a detrimental impact on our patient's mental health and access to health care. This is especially true in children who are immigrants or live in a mixed status family. A study in California showed that children of undocumented parents have significantly higher risks of internalizing behavioral problems like anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, withdrawal, or a need for attention. Although there is a growth of mental health issues in immigrant communities, many are not seeking services due to fear of deportation intertwined with cultural stigma.
This 60-minute webinar will review recent field research findings in California with mixed-status families, including data collected via a provider survey conducted by CPCA in collaboration with The Children's Partnership and funded by the California Program on Access to Care regarding the mental health of immigrant children and their families. The discussion will explore policy and issue recommendations to better support children from immigrant families. We will also highlight the strength and resilience that exists among immigrant communities and will share examples of how immigrant families in California are supporting each other in today's difficult political environment to better strengthen policies and implement recommendations in the future.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Gain an understanding on how children in California have been impacted by immigration policies, rhetoric, and national measures, specifically, through health care enrollment and utilization data
Be able to identify at least two resources to support immigrant families that are available from partner organizations
