RAND Study: Embedding WET into Collaborative Care for PTSD in Primary Care

The California Primary Care Association is partnering with the RAND Corporation and Boston University to study the implementation and effectiveness of embedding a new therapeutic intervention for PTSD within community clinics and health centers.  This is a national study with important implications for the future of PTSD treatment in community health.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) affects over 10% of adults in the general population and is even more prevalent in primary care settings affecting up to 23% of patients. Integrating evidence-based psychotherapies (EBPs) for PTSD within primary care collaborative care interventions can be challenging.  Common EBPs for PTSD such as cognitive behavioral therapy, prolonged exposure, or cognitive process therapy are time-intensive (e.g., 12 weeks duration, 60-90 minute sessions) making them difficult to deliver within primary care settings. Developed by researchers at Boston University, Written Exposure Therapy (WET) is a relatively new approach that has yielded positive outcomes among low-income individuals with PTSD. WET is a brief, low intensity intervention (only five, 40-minute sessions), requires minimal therapist training, and has evidence of high retention rates. Embedding WET within collaborative care interventions in primary care may be an effective strategy for disseminating evidence-based PTSD treatment to underserved populations.

RAND is partnering exclusively with CPCA and California CHC’s to pilot this intervention and we are looking for interested health centers of all sizes to participate.  This 1 hour webinar will introduce the audience to the WET intervention, describe the study parameters, and provide an opportunity to ask questions of the RAND research team.

Learning Opportunities:

Understand how WET compares to other evidence based practices for PTSD treatment
Learn more about the study design and inclusion/exclusion criteria
Review study involvement for health centers, CHC staff, and CHC patients
Have the chance to ask questions of the research team

Fees:
The CPCA Behavioral Health Peer Network is pleased to offer this special webinar session to all health centers and other interested stakeholders. As a peer to peer learning activity, the webinar is offered free of charge.
