Simple oversights at a health center or mistakes made by well-meaning staff who lack an understanding of gender and sexual identity may affect the quality of care provided for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, and other sexual and gender minority (LGBTQIA+) patients. This 60-minute webinar will present LGBTQIA+ affirming language best practices health centers can apply, and discuss strategies that further enhance a primary care clinicians ability to provide care that leverages behavioral health expertise. Guest speaker, Dr. Alex Keuroghlian, will also discuss specific social determinants of health that affect the behavioral and mental health of LGBTQIA+ people including: addressing substance use disorder, providing trauma informed care, and managing mental health concerns alongside sexuality and gender identity.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Learn how to integrate behavioral health care strategies into a primary care practice through the utilization of LGBTQIA+ affirming language and actions that respond to and improve the behavioral and mental health of patients;
- Learn best practices that enhance a team’s understanding of cultural sensitivity and accommodate LGBTQIA+ identified patient needs, especially those experiencing behavioral health difficulties and mental health distress;
- Dispel rumors and discuss safer sex practices in the context of COVID-19;
- Learn trauma-informed approaches to initiating care during the pandemic outbreak;
- Identify how social and cultural structures create minority stress for the LGBTQIA+ community and how these stressors lead to behavioral health issues; and,
- Identify additional free education and training resources made available through the National LGBT Health Education Center.
PRESENTER
Dr. Alex S. Keuroghlian, Director of Education & Training Programs, Fenway Institute
Dr. Alex S. Keuroghlian is the Director of Education and Training Programs at The Fenway Institute and Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School (HMS). He directs the National LGBT Health Education Center, a HRSA-funded cooperative agreement to improve health care for LGBTQIA+ people at health centers. Dr. Keuroghlian concurrently directs the Evidence-Informed Interventions Coordinating Center for Technical Assistance, also funded by HRSA, to implement effective and culturally-tailored interventions nationally for people with HIV in four focus areas: transgender women, Black men who have sex with men, behavioral health integration into primary medical care, and identifying and addressing trauma.
He is the Public and Community Psychiatry Curriculum Director for the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH)/McLean psychiatry residency program, clerkship director for the fourth-year elective in sexual and gender minority health at HMS, director of the MGH Psychiatry Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation Program, and faculty co-director of the HMS Sexual and Gender Minority Health Equity Initiative.
Dr. Keuroghlian received his medical degree and Masters in Neurosciences from the Stanford University School of Medicine. He completed his psychiatry residency at the MGH/McLean Hospital training program, where he also served as Chief Resident in Public and Community Psychiatry, and a Master of Public Health (Health Policy and Management) at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
He was awarded the annual MGH Primary Clinical Experience Teaching Award by Harvard medical students, the Jonathan F. Borus Outstanding Educator Award by the HMS Department of Psychiatry, the HMS Excellence in Clinical Instruction in Psychiatry Award, and the HMS Young Mentor Award.
At Fenway, Dr. Keuroghlian works as a clinical psychiatrist within the Behavioral Health Department and undertakes research at The Fenway Institute. He has authored over 50 research articles, review articles, and book chapters on topics that include gender-affirming hormone therapy and surgery, HIV medication adherence, post-traumatic stress disorder and substance use disorders among transgender adults, sexual orientation and gender identity data collection, caring for LGBTQ immigrants, and homelessness among LGBTQIA+ youth.
