25+ IMPACT
Over the past 25 years, the California Primary Care Association (CPCA) has enjoyed immense success. Originally created by California health center leaders in 1994 with minimal staff and minor investment, CPCA has grown to represent the interests of the largest health center network in the country. It hasn’t always been an easy road, and the early years proved difficult, but working together, CPCA and its members have forged a path for others to follow.
Since their inception, health centers have been the backbone of our health care system and have an imperative impact on the communities they serve. Today, more than 1,330 community health centers serve the state of California, and provide comprehensive, high quality care to nearly 7 million people – one out of every six residents. In these communities, health centers are an important engine supporting local economies, bringing in an infusion of crucial state and federal funds to these areas and providing high-paying professional jobs for local residents.

Community health centers were founded by community health and civil rights activists over 50 years ago who fought to ensure every person in America could have access to health care services in their local communities, regardless of ability to pay. CPCA and our member health centers have worked together the past 25 years to continue that fight here in the golden state – ensuring that All Californians have access to care regardless of their ability to pay, their insurance coverage or their immigration status.
25+ INNOVATION
Community health centers have been innovating within the health care space since they began in the 1960s. The creation of the California Primary Care Association was an innovation of its own here in the golden state, when the community health centers here came together to form the organization in 1994. Since the beginning of the health center movement in California, there had never been a single group or organization that represented the interests of the state’s community clinics and health centers.

California community health centers are on a mission to improve the health and quality of life for individuals throughout the state, which in turn improves community health, education outcomes and economic stability. In fact, community health centers are the backbone of healthy communities and a healthy California, bringing value to not only those they directly serve – but the entire state.
