Using CHWs/Promotoras To Reduce Fears in Immigrant Patients

CPCA is offering this multi-part training program to help answer questions and address concerns that health centers and regional associations have regarding immigration and the impact that federal policies have on their patients and staff.

Given the fear and anxiety that many immigrant communities are facing due to the current administration’s immigration policies, many patients are choosing to forgo necessary primary and preventive care services, resulting in complications for their physical, mental and behavioral health. In some cases, patients are asking to be dis-enrolled from crucial public benefit programs such as Medi-Cal and other social services.  It is clear that the political climate surrounding immigration is creating barriers to accessing health care for our immigrant communities.

Community Health Workers (CHWs), also known as Promotoras, health coaches and by a number of other titles, have demonstrated their ability to improve health behaviors and outcomes, particularly for racial and ethnic minority communities. Because many of these allied health professionals come from the community, they have a heightened understanding of community needs and provide responsive, culturally and linguistically appropriate health care services that can help breakdown some of the access barriers that have been created for our immigrant patients.

In order to utilize CHWs/Promotoras successfully, it is very important that the executive team understand the challenges that CHWs/Promotoras face while working to support immigrant patients.  During this webinar  Health Outreach Partners (HOP) will review outcomes from four convening’s held throughout California, Oregon and Washington states set to identify the challenges in working with immigrant patients as well as current and new solutions to effectively reach them.  HOP will also review the, “The Silent Crisis,” report and provide information on training and resources that can help CHWs be better prepared to work with the immigrant community. Additionally, we plan to have Clinica Romero share best practices and outcomes from utilizing CHWs to address fears expressed by immigration patients and will have Vision y Compromiso provide information on the trainings they offer to Promotoras working with the immigrant communities.

To receive a refund, all cancellations must be in writing and must be received by emailing according to the following schedule:

  • Cancellations received on or before 20 business days of the event will result in a full refund minus a 10% processing fee.
  • Cancellations received on or before 10 business days of the event will result in a 50% refund minus a 10% processing fee.
  • Cancellations received on or before 5 business days of the event will result in a 25% refund minus a 10% processing fee.
  • No refunds will be offered for cancellations received after 5 business days before the event.
  • Cancellations after the conclusion of the event are non-refundable.
  • Substitutions are encouraged.
  • “No Shows” are non-refundable.
